Another proud evening at the annual LDUGC awards dinner, held at Elland Road on Thursday 8th March, for PDGC. Mr Captain, Stuart Charlesworth, received the 1st Division Team Championship Trophy, the first time the Club had secured top honours in the highest division. Andy Wiltshire collected the LDUGC Foursomes Final Trophy, having beaten Horsforth 4&3 in the final played at Sandmoor with Darren Walton. Special thanks to Paul Hunter, Partner with St James Place Financial, who generously sponsored the Scratch Team. Congratulations to all representatives, here’s to another exciting season ahead.
Both Andy Wiltshire and Simon Coumbe won their Singles and Foursomes matches to help secure a 24-12 win over Harrogate in the YIDDU (Inter District) matches yesterday at Ilkley Golf Club. They also represent the Union in the Team Championship matches at Cleveland this coming Sunday. Keep up the excellent work chaps!
Andy Wiltshire, Daz Walton and Simon Coumbe all scored points in a 24-12 win against East Riding in the Yorkshire Inter Union Golf League. The matches played at Cookridge Hall on Sunday consolidated second position in the league. Well done chaps.
At their recent match vs. Bradford Union played at Bracken Ghyll Golf Club, the LDUGC scratch team came out victorious with a final score of 19-17. Simon Coumbe represented PDGC and added a valuable point to the tally in the afternoon foursomes matches. This leaves the team lying 2nd to Sheffield in the league. Well played Simon.
Congratulations to the Scratch Team on winning the LDUGC Scratch League Top Division. This achievement is even more meratorious after being promoted as League Two Champions in 2016, the first club to achieve this in consecutive seasons. Regular team members Simon Coumbe and Andy Wiltshire had waited 22 years to be part of this moment and said they are proud to be part of such a great Club. They also put testament to the first class practice facilities and course to hone their games. Thanks were expressed to the whole team as well as Scratch Team Captain Andy Johnson, Team Manager, Barrie Middleton and regular supporters who have turned up in all weathers to show their support.
The Result of the match last evening between Pontefract and Low Laithes was a 5&3 victory for Pontefract. The old guard of Wiltshire and Walton came out on top against a very youthful pair of young guns from Low Laithes whose combined age was 36 against ours of 96…….very scary!
Last night the Scratch Team played their final home game of the season against a strong side from Cookridge Hall. Simon Coumbe had a thrilling match with Adam Frontal, coming back from 2 down after 13 to go all the way to the 18th, unfortunately Adam made a great 3 that could not be matched. Club Champion Andy Wiltshire was up early in his match with Tom Pilling, who fought back strongly, going 1 up after 10 before another AW birdie fest saw him win 3&2. Ryan Armitage again playing third played some great golf but putts that sometimes drop did not meaning he could not get away from Tom Madden and Ryan was 1 down for most of the back 9, until a wonderful up and down from the back of the 16th squared the match, a half in par on the 17th was followed by a heart in the mouth moment for all the PDGC spectators as his putt from the back of the 18th rolled 8 feet past the hole, unphased by this Ryan rolled it into the middle of the cup to half the match. The result along with others leaves us 2 points clear of Wike Ridge at the top of the league with Cookridge a further point behind as we move into the final round of the championships. Meaning we play away at Darrington Golf Club teeing off at 1700 next Monday knowing that 5 points will see us crowned league champions. The team would very much appreciate it if any members can make it to Darrington and show their support. Many thanks to Lee Alton for sponsoring the match balls last night and to the members who came out to support. Andy Johnson, Captain.
The Scratch Team were in action again last night playing away at Wakefield Golf Club, Simon Coumbe going out first was the latest player to have his belief checked by the unbelievable putting of Neil Kinghorn, who holed at least 6 long putts at crucial times in a match that eventually ended in a half, Tom Hough, in for the injured Andy Wiltshire, got off to a fast start but a few mid round errors made it a high mountain to climb against Andy Stringer, Ryan Armitage had a great battle with Scott MacGreggor but unfortunately his putting almost equaled Mr Kinghorn’s beating Ryan on the 17th. This was the teams first defeat of the year & depending on how other results go could cut our lead at the top of the league to 3 with 12 more points to play for. Our next match is our final home game of the season against rivals Cookridge Hall, it would be great if as many of the members could come out and show their support. Andy Johnson, Captain.
The Scratch Team were in action again last night, playing away at a very sunny Howley Hall, teeing off the 11th to avoid a back log of 4 balls on the first, Tom Hough led the way but struggled against a very good player, Ryan Armitage out second took an early lead which slipped away over the front 9 but never giving up he won the 10th to take the points, Simon Coumbe out last this week had a hard fought match which ended in bizarre style with a double boggy half on the 10th to halve the match. With Cookridge loosing 5-1 at home to Wike Ridge our lead at the top of the first division extended to 5 points with 4 games remaining. Thank you to Peter Lawrie for kindly sponsoring the match balls for the team and to the members who came to support. With the team’s progression in the Yorkshire divisional championships this year a few sponsorship opportunities have opened up, if any member wishes to sponsor a sleave of golf balls for the team please contact Andrew Johnson or Ian in the Pro Shop.
The Scratch team maintained their lead at the top of Division One with a 5-1 home win vs. Darrington on Monday evening. Andy, back on form had a 3 & 2 win against Jason Newton, Simon won 2up against Richard Flowitt, whilst Ryan had a close match with Martin Clancy gaining a point each. Next match Monday 19th June away at Howley Hall.
The above match was played at Howley Hall on Sunday, with the Leeds & District team winning 25-11. The format of the match is foursomes in the morning with 12 singles matches in the afternoon. Andy Wiltshire and Ryan Armitage represented Pontefract, both winning their foursomes and singles matches to help seal the victory. Well played Gents.

Andy Wiltshire and Darren Walton played their latest knock out match in the Yorkshire Union Inter Club Foursomes vs. Cleckheaton last evening, the match being played at Garforth. Unfortunately despite a valiant effort they lost the match on the 22nd hole to their opponents. Thanks to Barrie Middleton for his enthusiastic support of the team and as Ball Sponsor.
The Scratch team maintained their excellent start to the season at a rain lashed Cookridge Hall on Monday evening, winning the match 4-2. Ryan Armitage won 1up in an evenly fought match with Adam Frontal, whilst Simon Coumbe won 2up against Luke Whitaker. Andy Wiltshire lost his match 4&3 against Tom Pilling, suffering his first lost point of the season, form is temporary as we all know. An excellent result away from home and maintains a 4 point gap at the top of Division 1. Next match at home vs. Darrington on Monday 12th June, please come along and support the team if you can.
Congratulations to Andy Wiltshire, Tom Hough and Daz Walton on gaining promotion in yesterdays 4th Division Team Championship held at Cottingham Park in blustery conditions. A combined 36 hole total of 474 saw them finish runner up on the day to Hallowes with 471. Well done Gentlemen, you did the Club proud as always.
The scratch team were in action again last night playing Wakefield at home, a last-minute change of personal due to injury saw Andy Johnson taking Simon Coumbe’s place at number one, despite a close match with St Andrews University team member Scott Mac Gregor, he lost 2&1. Andy Wiltshire was taken all the way to the 17th by 14-year-old Ewan Bromley before closing out to win 2&1, Ryan Armitage fought all the way to the 18th beating George Heath 1 up. The result sees us stay 2 points clear at the top of the league. Thank you to Les Power for sponsoring the match balls and to all the members who came out to watch. The team have a week off now before a very busy stretch of away games, firstly facing Low Laithes at 1730 on the 2nd June, then a top of the table clash with second place Cookridge Hall on the 5th June and finally they travel to Cottingham Park on the 7th for the YUGC 4th Division County Championships. The team return home to face Darrington Golf Club on Monday 12th June.
The Scratch Team played in the Yorkshire Union 5th Division Team Championships yesterday (Wednesday) at a very wet Wath Golf Club. Unusually the competition was cut from 36 holes to 18 due to terrible weather, with our team more than half way through their second round and all in good shape. Fortunately this did not affect the outcome with the team promoted into the 4th division which is to be contended at Nottingham Parks Golf Club on the 7th June. Next game is at home to Wakefield on Monday night from 1700 Andy Johnson – Team Captain
The Scratch Team played their first away game last night, at Wike Ridge, Simon Coumbe once again led the way on a wet evening, with a fine 2&1 victory against Steven East, Ryan Armitage could not match Dean Wright’s putting loosing 3&2 while Andy Wiltshire continued his strong start beating Barry Hardcastle 4&3. This victory extends our early lead at the top of the league to 2 points. Next match at home on the 22nd May vs. Wakefield. Andy Johnson, Scratch Team Captain.
Andy Wiltshire and Daz Walton also got off to a flying start in the Yorkshire Foursomes with a comfortable 4 & 3 win against Bradford Moor. Well played chaps!
Last night (Monday) the Scratch Team got off to a winning start in the first match back in the first division. A strong Howley Hall team were beaten 5 & 1. Andy Wiltshire continuing his impressive form with a 5&4 victory, Ryan Armitage returned to the team and despite getting caught in traffic on the way to the club which gave him no time for a warm up, also managed a comfortable 5&4 victory. Simon Coumbe led the way going out first against an impressive opponent, battled hard on the way in with birdies at 15,16 & 18 to earn a very valuable half point for the team. Thank you to Mr. Captain for sponsoring this match and to all the members who came out to watch on a very cold Monday night. Next week the team is away at Wike Ridge, 1700 start.
Yesterday the Scratch Team of Andy Wiltshire, Warren Haywood and Simon Coumbe had a comfortable win 2 & 1 against Wakefield in the LDUGC Inter Club K/O. Returning to the team Simon led the way and won his match 5 & 3 against Dan Bradbury, whilst Andy had a very comfortable win 8&6 against Neil Kinghorn. Warren was able to concede his match on the 15th whilst 2 down and with the sun going down and temperature dropping.

The LDUGC awards dinner took place last evening at Elland Road. Jack McKee, President of the Union was supported by 8 Past Captain’s of the Club and an enjoyable evening was had by all. Our current Captain, Tony Cook, accepted the 2nd Division Scratch League Trophy on behalf of the team, who unfortunately could not attend. We wish them another successful year ahead in the top division.
The 2017 LDUGC fixtures have been published. Despite the fact that we would have 2 teams promoted and 2 teams relegated in the Scratch leagues before the 2016 season started the withdrawal of Roundhay Park from Division 4 left us with only 5 teams in Division 4. To maintain 6 teams in each League we could not promote 2 teams from Divisions 2,3 and 4 so only the League winners were promoted this year in accordance with Monday Night Scratch League Rules – Rule 2. — At the end of the season promotion and relegation will be two teams from each Division when possible. The same rule has been applied to maintain 3 Junior Leagues with 6 teams participating each week. We appreciate that those teams who finished second in the Scratch and Junior Leagues will be disappointed not to have been promoted but we try to maintain equal numbers in each League at the start of each season to encourage healthy competition. John Grimbleby. Honorary Secretary. Leeds & District Union of Golf Clubs
Unfortunately the scratch teams cup run came to an end on Monday night in the semi final when they were beaten 5-1 by an impressive team of plus handicap golfers from Waterton Park. The game was played on neutral turf at Howley Hall. This almost brings a close to the scratch season, after winning the 2nd division and promotion back to the 1st. Only the foursomes knockout & the first division team championships remain. Well played everyone for keeping PDGC in the spotlight.

Andy Wiltshire and Ryan Armitage performed with credit when they formed part of the LDUGC team in the Inter Union Match vs. York, the matches played at Forrest Park. Andy won both his foursomes and singles matches, whilst Ryan won his singles match in the afternoon on the last hole, showing coolness to sink a lengthy putt. Whilst York, who are top of the league, won the game 24-12, once again PDGC were well represented to make our very own Jack McKee, President LDUGC proud.

The Scratch team got their inter club knock out competition off to a winning start at home against Horsforth in blustery conditions on Tuesday evening. After a very wet Monday evening across the Leeds and District, our Scratch Team emerged victorious once again and sit just one point off the top of the league following a 5-1 win over league leaders Selby. Andy Wiltshire finished first with a 6 & 4 victory shortly before Tony Cole’s opponent conceded a 2 foot birdie put on the 13th to give Tony a 7 & 5 victory. Tom Hough endured a chipping master class by Selby’s best player over the final 3 holes which denied him the victory his approach play deserved but a confident 3 foot tap in at the last earned him his first point of the season.
Next up is Horsforth at home on Tuesday 31st in the Leeds and District k/o. Daz Walton, Tom Hough and making his debut for the team, new member, Chris Hughes complete the team, good luck lads.

Andy Wiltshire and Darren Walton won their match against Selby on Monday evening 4 &3. The match, played at Mid Yorkshire, had a slow start before they slipped into the familiar groove of Par golf and victory was achieved. Well done Gentlemen.
Despite a 3-3 draw away at Wakefield, unfortunately this was not enough to prevent the team being relegated from the top division. Despite the disappointment, I’m sure the team will rally together and look for the positives. On behalf of the Members, thank you to those who represented the team in 2015. Scratch Team Result 24th August 2015
