You are cordially invited to a member forum on Wednesday 28th February 2018 at 8.00 pm in the Clubhouse to discuss the proposed development plans outlined in the attached document. Members will have the opportunity to ask questions of the developers themselves, the Architect, Head Green-keeper and Directors. Subject to members being in favour of the proposals the Club will apply for full planning permission- we already have outline planning permission. Phase 1 (Practice Area) of the planned improvement will begin as soon as practically possible should this be granted- normally 8-12 weeks. Phase 2 will be the evolvement of holes 1, 2 and 3 in order to make them more ‘Mackenzie-like’ and will not begin until Phase 1 is complete. Should you be unable to attend, any questions you have should be forwarded to myself at email@example.com and will be asked on the night.

New year’s eve saw the clubhouse near to capacity to welcome in the new year, with the superb and varied menu provided by Rob Crookes backed up by the mix of games quizzes and disco provided by John Atha. Between them they created a fantastic atmosphere and the revellers saw out the old and brought in the new in traditional fashion. Safe to say, a good time was had by all.
The final 200 Club Dinner of the year saw a late change to the planned entertainment when, due to illness, Richard York was unable to appear. His replacement was a lady with a fantastic voice and personality, Simina, who provided almost two hours of rich and varied songs covering Cher, Dusty Spingfield, Adele and many other music icons. Add the high quality of food provided by Rob Crookes into the mix and the evening was a big success – the Christmas party mood took over as the dance floor became full to overflowing.
Whilst everyone had a great time, perhaps the happiest couple on the night was Ted Meek and his wife, Joan, as Joan’s number came out first to win the top prize plus the £50 snowball. Thanks must go to Sylvia Cook, the driving force behind the 200 Club in terms of collecting the cash and keeping the necessary records. Sylvia is now accepting subscriptions for 2018, and for anyone wishing to join in for the first time please contact either Sylvia or any member of the Social committee.
Our next social event is New Year’s Eve, with John Atha providing plenty of entertainment from quizzes and games to music and the countdown to the New Year.
The first 200 Club draw of 2018 will be on Saturday, 24th February which we will tie in with a late Valentine’s theme, Vinnie Naylor providing the entertainment, A NIGHT NOT TO MISS!!!
We have received more than 80 positive responses to the communication sent out on Monday 11th December 2017. There have been no negative responses.
The decisions made at the meeting are therefore deemed to be ratified and will stand.
Thank you for your support.
Chris Peace President
After a fantastic buffet provided by Rob Crookes, Mr Captain Tony Cook and Madam Captain Jill Rowett handed over a cheque for £4649.76 on behalf of the members of Pontefract & District Golf Club to the Prince of Wales Hospice. The cheque was accepted by David Stewart, Chief Executive of the Hospice, along with Tony’s daily contact Jill Auty, the Hospice Canteen manageress. Tony thanked all involved in making his year as captain so enjoyable, and then introduced the club captain for 2018, Stuart Charlesworth.
Stuart complemented Tony on his year and thanked him for the help given by Tony and his family, then went on to explain his hopes for the coming year, before introducing incoming vice captain Jim Roberts.
Outgoing ladies captain Jill Rowett then called upon incoming ladies captain Elizabeth Newbould, who accepted the Lady captain’s brooch. Elizabeth then called forward her vice captain Janet Coates.
Seniors captain Roger Blatherwick introduced the 2018 seniors captain Graham Addison before incoming Tigers captain Martin Dobson took to the stage to outline his plans for 2018. Keith Young was introduced as Tigers vice captain. John Atha then thanked all concerned during his year as Rabbits captain before introducing incoming Rabbits captain Ian Leeman.
In closing, Stuart announced that for personal reasons Elizabeth and himself had nominated the Yorkshire Air Ambulance as their chosen charity for 2018, and tongue in cheek suggested of members that any unwanted Christmas presents could be used for future raffles.
Come along and support our incoming Club Captain, Stuart Charlesworth and Lady Captain, Elizabeth Newbould on Saturday 9th December, proceedings start with a free buffet prepared by Rob Crookes at 7pm. The inauguration ceremony will commence at 8pm with a presentation to the Prince Of Wales Hospice from our outgoing Club Captain, Tony Cook.
Please see letter acknowledging your contribution from the recent golf event held at the Club and in support of Prostate Cancer UK. Thank you to everyone who participated or contributed.
Members are advised the use of winter mats and teeing up are both optional. The Greens Sub Committee and Gary hope that the majority of members will use either option to help protect the course over the winter period.
Please see below our latest Club Newsletter and AGM notification. Hard copies will be available in the Clubhouse from Friday 24th November.
Members are informed that all greens over the winter period will have yellow flags in place whether or not, front, middle or back pin positions are in use. In adverse weather conditions Gary intends to use the aprons as temporary greens to protect summer playing surfaces. The greens staff will endeavour to provide you with the best possible playing conditions during the winter period and your assistance in always repairing pitch marks, replacing divots and observing any roped off areas would be appreciated.
On the advice of our Head Greenkeeper, Gary Anderson, optional use of the winter multimat will be in place from Saturday 25th November and until further notice. The multimat can be purchased outright for £5 from the Pro Shop, alternatively they can be hired with a deposit of £10, returnable after the winter period. Should you not wish to use these mats then optional teeing up on the fairways will also commence this Saturday. Please do support the greens staff in their endeavours to protect the course during the winter months.
Please see the attachment and link for details of the LDUGC Associate Member Scheme. This represents excellent value and you get to play on some of the best courses in the region for a one off fee of £25. Application forms are also available on the notice board outside the Pro Shop.
The Annual Prize Presentation evening took place on Saturday. Mr Captain commenced proceedings by announcing this years Captain’s Prize winner, awarded to Jack McKee in recognition of his commitment to the Club over the past 41 years, becoming Club Captain in 2012 and then having the honour to become the 5th Pontefract and District Member to be President in 2016 of the Leeds and District Union of Golf Clubs. Mr President, Chris Peace then thanked everyone for coming along to support the prize-winners this evening and also thanked our new Caterer, Rob Crookes, for an excellent buffet. Mr Vice-President, Mark Ripley, then introduced the respective winners presented by Mr Captain and Lady Captain. Andy Wiltshire and Chantelle Shaw once again were worthy winners of the Club Championship Trophies. Finally, Jack McKee presented the Scratch Team with mementoes in recognition of their historical achievement in winning back to back LDUGC Championships, (2nd division champions in 2016 and 1st division champions in 2017). Well played Ladies and Gentlemen.
Members are advised the Social Committee have agreed, with immediate effect, that the monthly 200+ Club draw will take place immediately after the dinner tables have been cleared and not at 9:30pm prompt as now. The reason for this change is to enable the evenings entertainer to commence his or her act without having to break at 9:30pm for the draw, thus avoiding any loss of continuity. The new timings are therefore likely to be between 9pm and 9:30pm in which you have to be in attendance to win the snowball prize.
Members will be aware we have recently changed the course tee furniture, generously donated by the Barbara Taylor Trust. As a result the old tee signage plaques are now being offered to anyone who may be interested in some Club memorabilia, perhaps for your garden. The plaques, no posts, are being offered at £20 each, or £30 with a £15 credit to your member bar card. If interested, please call into the office along with your payment and choice of plaque. They will be offered on a first come first served basis.
On behalf of the Social Committee you are invited to our Annual Dinner Dance and 200 Club Draw on Saturday 25th November at the Kings Croft Hotel, 7:00pm for 7:30pm. Following the October draw, the snowball has rolled over once again and the lucky winner in attendance could win £150 in addition to one of the 5 monthly prizes. Entertainment on the night will be by Darren Lee as ELVIS. Tickets priced at £25 each.
Members and visitors are advised they should not take short cuts through the green-keepers yard as this presents a significant health & safety risk, please use the farm track from the 16th ladies tee if you choose to complete your round early. Thank you for your cooperation. Gary Anderson, Head Green-keeper.
Thank you to everyone who helped raise £368 on the day towards the Prostate Cancer Charity Fund. Prizes available from the bar staff.
105 players turned out in support of Prostate Cancer yesterday, an excellent effort considering the challenging conditions. With thanks in particular to Brian Fisher who initiated this event and to those who participated, your support was much appreciated. Anyone who couldn’t play yesterday are welcome to make a donation by calling into the Managers office before a final total raised is published.
Congratulations to Neil Woolford with a Nett 66 beating Simon Davis on count-back and Brian Pye (67) to secure this years ‘Ted Watson’ Eclectic.
The 10th year of the season ending ‘Parting Shot Trophy’ was played out at the delightful Ilkley Golf Club yesterday in bright but breezy conditions. Teams representing Mr Captain and President fought close matches, ending the day 3-3 in the match play. However, with 3 points for a win, 1 point for a half, and 0 for a loss Mr President’s team prevailed by 6 points, with the last group in swinging the result in the President’s favour. Well played everyone, the matches played as always in excellent spirit.
Please see link below to read Gary’s latest news update and note his comments regarding leaves and the rough. Gary has asked me to inform you the team are working as hard as they can to deal with the changeover from summer to autumn/winter conditions. Please take extra care when on the course during the coming winter months.
