Juniors vs. Barnsley

The juniors started the year with a 6-0 home defeat to an excellent Barnsley team, who had their only three junior members available. The team is very much in transition this year and is about building for the future. We do have a fair number of junior members, but in the main they are novices, yet to get a handicap and not ready to play for the team, where the maximum handicap anyone can play off is  is 21. I only have two junior members under 21 handicap. With such a small squad things did not help when injury and school commitments accounted for three of my better players. To put things into context, Mid Yorkshire, Normanton, Waterton Park and quite a few others don’t run a junior team due to lack of numbers. Captain Will Wright, who has given years of sterling service to the junior cause, lost on the 17th to a player their junior organiser admitted had the ’round of his life’. My two novices, Annie Skidmore and Rae Boothroyd stepped up to the plate and played really well. They were never going to be competitive in their matches due to handicap restrictions, but I have seen enough junior golfers swings in my time to know that these two young ladies will be very low handicappers in years to come. Anyone who has a child/grandchild who might be interested in having a go, I fully recommend joining Assistant Pro Steve Clancy’s junior academy, which is thriving and gives great hope for a bright future. Steve Hough – Junior organiser.
