Junior Update – 14th August

It’s a busy time in the world of junior golf with the team unfortunately losing 6-0 to Roundhay away who are confirmed as champions. We always get a friendly reception off the course at Roundhay but on their own course they have mid-teen handicapped players playing to low single figures and are nearly impossible to beat. On the plus side George Hough only lost narrowly and his matchplay skills are coming on leaps and bounds as we look to the future. The final league match is away at Mid Yorkshire on Tuesday with the team one point ahead of Moortown in second.

LDUGC junior championship – It has been frustrating that in the last few years our juniors have been unable to make any sort of a mark on the junior district showpiece event. However all that changed this year as Tom Hough came second in the individual gross, and Will Wright came third. This is no mean feat against the cream of the districts junior talent. Tom was three under gross and seemingly had the title won before a torrential downpour saw him get a triple and a double in the last few holes, whilst Will had an eagle in his impressive round.. These results meant both were well seeded as the top sixteen players competed for the matchplay crown. Both players won their last sixteen matches against very good opponents and were heading for a semi final against each other as Tom blew his opponent away in the quarters with a birdie blitz and an eagle. With Will two up and three to play in his match it all looked good but a lipped out putt cost him as he lost on the second extra hole. It was all smiles for Tom as he won 3 and 2 in the semi and goes on to play in the final probably on the 30th august. It was a very composed and impressive performance from Tom and as he is also leading the district order of merit it is becoming a wonderful end to his junior career. Will has another year and will be the man to beat next year. Steve Hough, junior organiser.
