Club History

The Club was formally opened on 3rd November 1904 by the Captain, Claude Leatham in the presences of Lord St Oswald and the 40 other founder members.  A 9 hole medal competition was held on what was then a 9 hole course.  The captain in his opening speech said “ that the links would undoubtedly prove a blessing to the neighbourhood and considerably enhance the prosperity of the town and he hoped that the Club would have a very successful career.  A further 9 holes were added in 1921/22 and the 18 hole course which prevailed for 75 years was opened on 1st May 1931.  The revamped course was inspired by Dr. Alister MacKenzie who is known throughout the golfing world for being the designer of Augusta, where the Masters title is competed for each year.

Which brings us round to the 2008 when the only the third major revision of the course was opened to an expectant membership.
